"A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD": Movie review by Jack Daniel
The first "Die Hard" movie is one of my all time favorites! Classic! "Die Hard 2" is in fact tied with the first one in my mind. Even # 3 with Samuel L. Jackson and Jeremy Irons was decent. It should have ended there! The 4th with Timothy Oliphant even still was DVD worthy. They should have definitely stopped after 4!
The latest is basically a foreign film. Nothing against foreign films, but in this case, it seems that no one in the U.S. would touch a 5th Die Hard film so let's get Bruce Willis and Jai Courtney (it's Jai...as is in "high") and do this movie in Russia and blow up Moscow as opposed to New York or L.A. or D.C.
In my opinion, the script was pretty weak, but there was plenty of action and lots of "hey...nobody can live through that"! The effects were over the top as expected but I just didn't feel like it was a "Die Hard "movie because John McClain, (who goes to Russia to get his son out of jail, not knowing that he was a deep cover operative with the CIA) didn't have anyone that HE was answering to. The conflict between McClain and whoever is power crazy is what makes "Die Hard........Die Hard"! That element was missing and the entire movie seemed forced and stiff. No mention of the Bonnie Bedelia character from the first movie, yet McClain now has 2 grown kids?
Had I waited for it on NETFLIX or DVD, then I might not have been so critical. The popcorn was good and I enjoyed hanging with my son at the movies. In 10 days.....OZ, The Great & Powerful! See you at the movies!
